What is eczema telling you? And what do most doctors not tell you?

Maybe you have never thought about eczema in this way. But what can eczema tell you? And what do most doctors not tell you?

Eczema can develop in many ways, not only from the outside, such as an allergic reaction to certain substances that your skin comes into contact with, such as nickel in metal, latex in gloves, but also from irritants and even medication. Eczema can also develop from a genetic predisposition (atopic or constitutional eczema). The people with eczema that I saw in my practice all told me that their doctors had told them that their eczema was 'chronic' and that there was nothing they could do about it, except apply corticosteroids to suppress the symptoms. "Just learn to live with it!" they were repeatedly told. But is that right? Is there really nothing they can do to improve their skin in the long term and reduce itching without using this type of - even burdensome - medication?

Yes, there is certainly more to do, provided that one looks for (contributing) causes of the imbalance in the skin and in the rest of the body. Even when there is a genetic predisposition, there are numerous possibilities to improve the skin. Think of looking for (contributing) causes such as nutrition, allergy, physical and/or mental stress, disruptive skin care, environment (air, water, pesticides, etc.), and from there looking to restore the disturbed balance. Even then, beautiful results can be achieved, provided that you can put your finger on the right sore spot(s) and do something about it.

And there are also many forms of eczema that have little or nothing to do with genetic predisposition but can be caused by, among other things, a disruption due to dietary errors or via a (food) allergy, infections on the skin or in the intestines, a disturbed microbiome, a weakened skin barrier due to incorrect skin care, etc. Even then, the treatment options are diverse and are also aimed at tackling the cause and restoring the balance in the body and in the skin. During my work as a skin therapist, an important common thread turned out to be digestion including the intestines. Many people with skin problems had to deal with various forms of abdominal complaints and an abnormal bowel pattern. Stool research showed me as a therapist that there was always an abnormal microbiome present in (serious) skin problems such as eczema, rosacea and acne. And treating from that microbial imbalance and taking into account possible dietary errors, food allergies and intolerances, stress and environmental factors including skin care, regularly showed very nice and also long-lasting results. I describe several of these cases in my 2nd and 3rd book to better understand and recognize the skin-intestine connection.

In short, if you are a skin professional and want to learn to understand why your client(s) continue to walk around with unexplained chronic skin complaints, read my book about the skin-gut axis and then go on a journey of discovery into the world of the skin and its parameters in collaboration with our microbiome, immune system, intestines, our stool, lifestyle and nutrition.
